Our History

Washington County Hospital was built in 1951. We are a county hospital dedicated to providing quality healthcare for 6,000 plus residents in our service area. Since it’s doors opened in May of 1952, the hospital has been a staple in the area and thrived with the support of the strong community of Washington County. After the need was established for a hospital in Washington County in the 1940’s the community went to work. Built with a rich history of philanthropy with donations of cash and labor from community members and with help by taxes on all property in Washington County, the hospital represented a total investment of about $350,000. Initial bonds for financing were voted for and issued in 1944. WCH was renovated during a two year period ending in 1970 in which the hospital was expanded with the idea of improving healthcare. In October of 2012, ground breaking took place for the biggest renovation in the history of WCH. This massive project was completed in the fall of 2015. New additions along with renovated patient rooms and ancillary departments brought the hospital back to present day.

Today Washington County Hospital provides comprehensive medical care as a critical access provider, licensed for 25 beds, a free-standing clinic with 15 physicians on the medical, courtesy and consulting staffs, and a professional and support staff of 50+ employees. Sponsored by patient revenue and philanthropy, the hospital is one of the most important assets of this community. It continues as it was established, with a tradition of excellence and a rich heritage of care and concern.

Since opening its doors, the primary mission of the hospital has been to provide the highest quality health care programs and services. The umbrella of its services and programs extends beyond the traditional concept of hospitalization for the sick and injured. The community now looks to the hospital to provide educational programs that enable the healthy to remain well. This role of promoting wellness is a new emphasis with new challenges. On average, one in four individuals in our service area will require medical services during the next year. Virtually every family in the area is affected by the quality of care available at the hospital or by the economic impact of its operation. The hospital is one of the largest employers in the county with a current payroll of approximately $1,300,000 and an estimated financial impact of $6,500,000 annually. The hospital has responded well to past challenges, and plans to grow from a desire to meet future needs.
